A dowel is a cylindrical rod, generally made out of wood, plastic, or metal that is used for holding together the components of a structure. Dowel Pins are cylindrical tools designed to secure into machinery by fastening different workpieces together. Dowel pins are most often associated and used in conjunction with socket screws. A dowel pin is inserted through concentric holes in two or more components, it locates and holds them together. A slight interference or transitional fit is typically used, which compresses the pin and generates significant friction to hold the pin securely in the holes. Steel dowel pins are often used in precision engineering applications for accurate location and alignment. This type of dowels are also available in other metals.
